NEXT SGVBA -LUNCH MEETING – MCLE Topic: ” Evidence Code Section 1129 – An Opportunity to Strengthen the Attorney-Client Relationship “

FRIDAY May 3, 2019 @ 12:30 PM SHARP!
Place: Almansor Court, located at 700 South Almansor Street, Alhambra, CA 91801.

On Friday, April 5, 2019, join us at the San Gabriel Valley Bar Association’s general meeting.

Newly adopted effective January 1, 2019, Evidence Code Section 1129 requires attorneys and their clients to sign a printed disclosure of mediation confidentiality restrictions before the clients agree to participate in mediation. The new law imposes an uncomfortable burden on attorneys to explain that confidential mediation communications cannot be used even if the clients sue for malpractice. We will discuss how this new section creates new opportunities for attorneys to build stronger relationships with their clients, and protect themselves at the same time.

Rande S. Sotomayor is a Los Angeles-based mediator with 35 years of commercial
litigation and dispute resolution experience, now specializing in business, real property,
employment, personal injury, insurance bad faith, and ERISA benefits disputes. Rande is
a Fellow in the International Academy of Mediators, has been selected to the 2017-2019
Southern California Super Lawyers lists, and has been named a Top Attorney by
Pasadena Magazine from 2016 through 2019. Rande also was selected to serve as a
professional mediator, judge, and trainer for the ICC International Commercial Mediation
Competition in Paris, France, 2016-2019.
The presentation provides 1.0 hours towards the required MCLE for the State Bar of California.
